Beside the Point

Ethics and Communication in Acupuncture

Examining and enhancing the practitioner/patient relationship

We learn all kinds of techniques and treatment approaches in acupuncture school, but not so much about how to use ourselves in the healing relationship.  Both ethical and psychological considerations come into play in this aspect of our work.

How can we attend to that part of the work? How can we refine the way we communicate with our patients?

The first part of the class will address boundaries and relationships, scope of practice and respecting the rights and dignity of our patients in considering ethical issues in practice.

Time will be given to address informed consent and confidentiality, as well as HIPAA and mandated reporter requirements.

The second part of the class will address treatment philosophy and the use of communication in the role of the acupuncturist as a skilled helper.  We will define and refine key communication skills.

Using such concepts as framing, reframing, empowerment, active listening, collaborative listening and the therapeutic use of self, participants will acquire new tools to consider and enhance communication with patients.   We will consider mindfulness and related skills as an example of a treatment philosophy that can enhance acupuncture care. The class will include lecture, small group work and group discussion. Come with questions and be prepared for lively conversation
