In this class, students learn to recognize the familiar faces of yin and yang throughout the course of labor and delivery. Using a clinical problem-solving approach, students learn to facilitate normal labor. Specific differential diagnosis needling and tui na hand techniques are introduced for labor that is excessively painful or failing to progress, preparation treatments, and moxa for breech. The course addresses but does not remove the malpractice insurance and credentialing matters that need to be addressed to needle professionally in a hospital. The acupressure techniques are applicable and teachable for any birth anywhere.

Claudia Citkovitz, PhD, MS, LAc., has for 13 years directed the Acupuncture Service at NYU Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.  The Service includes 12 preceptors and acupuncturists who provide inpatient care and clinical instruction for Master's, Doctoral and postgraduate students, in the areas of labor and delivery, pain management, and neurological rehabilitation including acute post-stroke care.  Dr. Citkovitz trained under Tom Bisio while attending acupuncture school in New York and studying Chinese language in Beijing; she is an adjunct faculty member at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine and the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine.  Dr. Citkovitz has published research in acupuncture during Labor and Delivery and acupuncture research methods; she completed a research PhD on acupuncture during stroke rehabilitation at the University of Westminster in London.  She sits on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, the Institutional Review Board of Touro College, and the NCCAOM's Task Force on Hospital-Based Practice.
