Pain Management with Soft Tissue

Gua Sha

Gua sha is a therapeutic method for pain management commonly used by clinicians of TCM to treat both chronic and acute pain. It is a precise technique that includes the use of a smooth tool and a "scraping" motion to release toxins and break up blood stagnation, thereby promoting the smooth flow of blood to injured areas and ultimately relieving pain. The methodology of Gua Sha is very similar to cupping, and the affect it has on relieving pain makes it an invaluable technique in the armamentarium of any massage therapist or acupuncturist.

In this class, Dr. Ping Zhang – Ph.D. in Oriental Medicine -- will teach students how to properly perform Gua Sha using a specially designed soft tissue massage tool, along with a deep tissue Tui Na program, to enhance the therapeutic effectiveness of this treatment. Her Jade stone board is the result of years of research and customization, designed for pressing firmly down on the muscles and along acupuncture meridians to perform a stroking motion in the local area of pain or discomfort.

The course is structured with step-by-step instructions and demonstrations, followed by hands-on practice and application of the soft tissue massage tool with deep fascia Tui Na protocols to treat various connective tissue conditions including the following:

  • Scar tissue adhesions
  • Myofascial syndromes
  • Nerve Impingement
  • Muscle spasms
  • Tendonopathies
  • Sprains and Strains
  • Edema and lymphatic drainage
  • Complex syndromes in the neck, back, shoulder, arm, knee and ankle area

This workshop will teach you how to incorporate the techniques of this powerful healing treatment in your professional practice and add a new dimension to how you can help treat some of your clients’ most common pain conditions.
